Ministry Through Media

Mark Jenkins - Minster of Media
& Producer of “The Victory Hour”

mark.jenkins@groveave.net

The primary role of the Media Ministry is to reach people with the life changing message of Jesus Christ. The program known as The Victory Hour has been an integral part of Grove’s overall ministry efforts for over 55 years. It reaches into neighborhoods, medical facilities, nursing and assisted living communities, and even into jails where it connects to people who are unable to come to church or participate in a bible study.

The Media Ministry of Grove has proven to be one of the most effective outreach ministries of any church in Virginia, providing both a witness for Jesus Christ and an important spiritual connection for the faithful. The Words of Victory program with Dr. Mark Becton is an edited form of The Victory Hour that is distributed nationwide on NRB networks. These programs are also web cast, making them available to anyone around the world with internet access.

“To use every godly means to spread His Word like seed… as far and as fast as possible” - Dr. Mark Becton

The Media Ministry also serves the church as a resource for worship by providing lights, sound, screens and video for worship services and special events. The Media Ministry manages the church and Words of Victory websites, as well as churchwide publications such as the church bulletin.

“The effective congregation of the 21st century will be part of the church that makes use of multi media. The new reformation will speak the language of our culture and employ the communications technology that shapes the culture.
— Michael Slaughter

A Volunteer Effort

The Media Ministry is basically a volunteer organization. The ministry is very blessed to have a dedicated group of individuals who faithfully donate their time and talent to help us “reach the lost and strengthen the saved" through media.

Some of these people who serve in technical positions provide light, sound, screens, and video on Sundays. Others answer the phone as a "caring listeners."

These people are school teachers, business & IT professionals, and salespersons. Only a few have a media background, yet they routinely provide an expert worship experience for our church members and for members of our television family.

If you would like information on how to become member of the Media Crew, contact Mark Jenkins.

TV FAQ’s
What is the Pastor’s role in the TV Ministry?
The Pastor of Grove Avenue Baptist Church serves as the principle spokesman for the Media Outreach. Just as for the church, he presents lessons in the Word of God and leads in ministry and evangelism. Much of the Media Ministry materials are derived from the Pastor's sermons and writings. These works are contributed to the Media Ministry effort. The Pastor does not receive any compensation for these materials.

How is the TV Ministry funded?
The Media Outreach is a partnership between members of Grove and the greater Christian community of Richmond, Virginia. This partnership also includes new TV viewers from cities across the country. Basically the church provides funding to maintain church presentation systems, helps with principle Media Staff, and provides a part of the airtime cost for the local TV program. The viewers then pay for the majority of the local airtime costs, all of the money needed for the national airtime costs, as well as money for additional part time ministry and production personnel to support the overall multi-media outreach.

What does the Media Ministry do during the week?
The Victory Hour program is edited for national distribution, a web cast is created, a radio program is edited, dubs are made of the programs in the various forms, and everything is sent out to the appropriate stations. The Media Ministry also handles correspondence with viewers, including follow up with people who called during one of the broadcasts.

The Media Staff is a key partner in worship planning, working with the Senior Pastor and the music leader. Services are planned and rehearsed, screens are programmed, the opening and closing to the television program are created, and media systems are prepared for Sunday. This includes repair or upgrade to presentation systems, the procurement supplies, and coordination of production crews.

Does the Media Ministry provide AV support for my Sunday School,
or ministry group?

The Media Ministry provides audio visual support on a limited basis for budgeted church wide events only. The church does not have sufficient audio visual resources to support the many small group meetings and events. Currently church operations and the Media Ministry work to cover meetings as they are able.

How do I get video or audio copies of the services?
Audio CD’s, videos and manuscripts of the Pastor’s messages are available at the Words of Victory Resource Center located in the Church Library. The Center is open Sunday mornings after each service. You can also place an order for programs from the Media Ministry by calling during church office hours at 804.740.8888. (Ask for the Media Secretary)

How can you help the Media Ministry?
Remember the Media Ministry in your prayers, encourage your friends and relatives to watch or listen to the various programs, and consider volunteering to answer phones, help in the resource center, or with the media production itself.

Is our TV Ministry really the oldest in the United States?
The Television Ministry began in January of 1952, one day before the "Today Show" began its program in New York. Grove’s TV program was the first broadcast ministry of any church in the Southern Baptist Convention and continues today as the longest-running Christian television program in America. The program known as The Victory Hour has been an integral part of Grove’s overall ministry effort for over 55 years. It has been one of the most effective outreach ministries of any church in Virginia, providing both a witness for Christ and a ministry connection to the faithful. This ministry has touched countless lives. For a complete history of the TV Ministry, see 50 Years of Faith. < click here >
